I have a 4 speed transfer case on this model. C(reeper),2,3,4. sitting in the driver seat just behind the range selector shift handle and slightly to the left is a {selector?} handle about the thickness of your little finger. It rides in a slot that is L shaped, {left then forward}. I can't fiqure out what purpose it serves, or how to make it work. Any suggestions?

BTW: thanks for your quick and accurate answers on the turf tire question from yesterday. I hope to be able to contribute here with answers in the future as I get more knowledgeable.

Can't say for sure, but that would be the PTO lever on my Ford. The 4wd is on the right top side of TX.

My Ford also has four ranges, but there is an optional creeper kit available. The creeper is a 6:1 underdrive that lowers the gears (raises the ratio) for each of the 12 forward and 4 reverse gears. I like the four reverse gears the TX gives me. The creeper option would give me eight, which might be overkill but sometimes I do wish I had the option.

The lever is a lockout for the creeper gear. Move the lever and hold it , then you can shift the transmission all the way into crawl. Right now the lowest gear you have obtained is 1st range. Crawl is way slower. Sometimes you have to let the clutch out a little and put it back in to move the gears a little in the trans so it will go into crawl. In crawl range and 1st gear, you will travel just a few feet a minute. Great for tilling, not so good for driving over to the neighbors.... ....

I wonder if a creeper is standard on the tractor? I think of them as pretty exotic features. Pretty good comment on the tractor if a creeper is standard equipment. A creeper would same me quite a bit of clutching when blowing heavy snows with a 3ph blower. Even with 4 reverse gears, the lowest (about .8 mph) still goes faster than the blower will clear and I have to stop periodically to let the blower catch up. ....

Tom:
I checked out the creeper gear feature on my YM2820 last night.........
It goes so sloooooooooooooooooooow you think your moving backwards. Ha Ha Ha! But wait. IF that's true......
You could go out to plow snow and if you are on the tractor long enough you would find yourself "back" in July or purhaps August. NO MORE SNOW! pretty neat huh? ....

If your creeper works like the option on my Ford, it provides a whole new set of gears that would give me 24 forward and 8 reverse. It could be like split-shifting old mountain transport tractors that had 5-speed TX's, 3-speed auxiliaries and 2-speed axles. I could spend all my time developing the short-term memory of a bartender just to figure where the next gear is. But I might like it.

Going very slow is the main application of a creeper, but I guess like the old transports, matching ground speeds to max hp engine rpm's is another possibility.

My occasional need to go slower than the tractor will go at PTO rpm mostly is when I'm don't get around to clear snow before it gets real deep. I don't have a tiller and that sounds like a very good application. I do have to 'bear wrestle' with my walk-behind tiller to chew up sod. But the wackiest application I hear for a creeper was pulling a submersible pump from a deep well. A wheel was rigged over the well. The lines ran over the wheel and attached to the tractor and away it crept. I have this image if the well was deep enough of a tractor pulling well line down a highway into the next township.

The creeper is standard on the 2820, and on a good deal of other Yanmars. Most all YM series 3-cylinder Yanmars over 20HP have crawl. It is another range, not a splitter. Since their primary application in Japan is tilling, it is important to be able to go slow. Some of the F series have crawl, but it works like a splitter.

They take tilling seriously in Japan. I have a F235(D) Yanmar and it has auto-leveling on it. It is a sensor that mounts on the tiller and "talks" to the tractor and operates the right tilting cylinder. If the tractor tire drops into a hole, the tiller remains level. This is called "UFO"...not sure why.

Another interesting feature is a sharp turn lever. When engaged, it enables the tractor to turn very sharp, as if one were applying just one rear brake. Also another button causes the tiller to raise whenever the tractor is put in reverse. The downside to all of this neat gadgetry is that it is trouble prone due to all of the connections.

On a FX42D I just bought (4-cylinder turbo diesel), it has power-shift with 4 forward and two reverse gears in each of 3 ranges. Shift without the clutch, kind of neat.

It's too bad that Yanmar isn't selling directly in USA now. I have had several of there mid-nineties machines and they don't take a back seat to any tractor. ....

I also have creeper on my Yanmar 2220D (26hp). I use it for trenching and tilling. At times it seems a little too fast for the trencher and I use the speed shift from 1st to Nuetral to compensate. Works great on the tiller, also it has 4 PTO speeds which greatly improve the finished soil. ....
